Extra Credit Option
The extra credit option is worth up to three extra credit points, which count toward the semester's total of 100 points. It is due by the Friday of Study Week.
Essentially, you need to capture images from a DVD that may be used by Shot Logger, an online system that facilitates editing analyses. A video tutorial explaining how to do this is available online, but here are step-by-step directions:
- Download and install the free VLC Media Player (or use it on the Phifer Reading Room's computers). Be sure to use a version that supports embedding time-code in file names!
- Select an American film you have access to on DVD (but not an iTunes file; they cannot be played by VLC).
- Films that have already been entered into Shot Logger are not eligible. Please see the list here:
- Grab a frame from the start of every shot in your film, making sure that the frame's time code is embedded in the file name, and that is surrounded by two "q's." Save it as a JPEG file. Thus, a file name for The Cosby Show might look something like this:
- Cosbyqq00_10_15qq0000023.jpg (the part of the file name in bold face is the time code, which is surrounded by "q's")
- Detailed instructions on how to configure VLC are here:
In order for your frames to earn extra credit you must:
- Create JPEG frames with the time code and "q's" embedded in the file name!
- Screen-shot file names that look something like the following will NOT be accepted: DoubleIndemnity-2014-04-07-14h55m10s172. When the time code appears as "14h55m10s172" it is indicating the time you took the screen shot and not the time code from the video file.
- Copy the frames to a blank CD/DVD or flash drive.
- Submit them either to Dr. Butler's mailbox in the TCF office (room 484 Phifer) or bring them by his office (486C Phifer).
Please let me know if you have any questions.
